What is ABA Therapy?

ABA therapy is an evidence-based therapy that has been used throughout the years and has proven its efficacy in improving individuals’ lives.
Applied Behavior Analysis focuses on treating the most important aspects that prevent the individual from learning and acquiring new skills. This therapy is inclusive and designed to develop each aspect of the individuals’ life such as communication, self-help, social skills, toileting, eating, academics and more. ABA therapy helps the child acquire new skills that have not been learned in the past and/or decrease the undesired behavior such as hitting, screaming, and/or self-injurious behavior.

ABA Therapy Approach For Autism Behaviour

Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement is a central focus of ABA therapy. It has been supported by evidence that behaviors or actions followed by something meaningful, such as a reward, encourages a person to be more likely to repeat the behavior. Over time this encourages positive behavior change. ABA therapy achieves this by determining a goal behavior. Each time the goal behavior is carried out, something of value to the individual is offered in return. Each goal and reinforcer are developed and tailored to meet the needs of everyone. The goal of ABA therapy is to use positive reinforcement to work on skills and goals that will help individuals become more independent and successful in the short and long term.
