What Is ABA Therapy For Autism: Everything You Need To Know

If you have a child with autism, you may be wondering what ABA therapy is. ABA therapy is a type of behavioral intervention that has been found to be effective in treating autism. In this blog post, we will discuss what ABA therapy is, how it works, and the benefits that it can provide for children with autism.

What Is ABA Therapy?

ABA therapy is a type of behavioral intervention that was developed by Dr. Ivar Lovaas in the 1960s. ABA therapy is short for Applied Behavior Analysis, which is the scientific study of human behavior. The goal of ABA therapy is to help children with autism learn new skills and improve their overall functioning.

How Does ABA Therapy Work?

ABA therapy is based on the theory of operant conditioning, which was developed by B.F Skinner in 1938. According to this theory, “behavior can be reinforced or punished in order for it to increase or decrease over time. Reinforcement means rewarding a child for doing something correctly and punishment means taking away something desirable from a child for doing something wrong.” To be clear, this is what the Theory by Skinner states. ABA Compass DOES NOT employ punishment as a tool when working with our clients, nor do we support that as a valid methodology.

In ABA therapy, positive reinforcement is used to increase desired behaviors and negative reinforcement is used to decrease undesired behaviors. Behavioral interventions are based on the principles of operant conditioning and are therefore highly customized to each individual child.
